Phase 1: Safety and stopping

Before power upgrades or cosmetics, make it safe.

  • Brake hydraulics service (master, lines, calipers/wheel cylinders as applicable)
  • Pads/shoes, rotors/drums, and hardware refresh
  • Steering inspection: tighten up play and replace worn ends

Phase 2: Steering, suspension, and wheels

Restos drive dramatically better after a front end refresh.

  • Knuckle/axle seal service and bearings as needed
  • Leaf spring bushings/shackles (if applicable) and shocks
  • Wheel bearings and proper torque/adjustment

Phase 3: Reliability basics

The goal is fewer breakdowns, fewer leaks, and predictable starts.

  • Cooling: radiator/hoses/thermostat; verify fan operation
  • Fuel delivery refresh as needed (filters, lines, tank condition)
  • Ignition/electrical basics (charging, grounds, key wear items)

Phase 4: Cosmetics and comfort

Once it’s safe and reliable, go after comfort and looks.

  • Seals/weatherstrips and glass channel items
  • Interior soft parts, trim, and hardware
  • Paint/bodywork after you know it’s mechanically sorted
