Quick rules of thumb
Use these defaults and you’ll be right most of the time:
- OEM is usually best for sensors, electronics, critical seals, and hard-to-diagnose drivability parts.
- Aftermarket is often great for wear items like pads/rotors, suspension components, and service parts—when you stick to known brands.
- Used is smart for discontinued/rare parts, trims, and big hard parts (when condition is confirmed).
When to choose OEM (Genuine Toyota)
OEM typically saves time and headaches when fitment matters and failures are expensive.
- Sensors and electronics (O2, crank/cam, switches depending on model)
- Critical gaskets/seals where leaks are painful to revisit
- Complex assemblies where tolerances matter
When aftermarket makes sense
Aftermarket can be a win when the brand is proven and the part is straightforward.
- Brakes: pads/rotors (quality brands) for daily driving and towing
- Suspension refresh: bushings, shocks, steering components (quality brands)
- Filters, belts, hoses (again—quality brands)
When used parts are the right answer
Used is often the only practical option for discontinued parts or older platforms (especially classics).
- Discontinued OEM parts (trim, brackets, older assemblies)
- Body/interior pieces where cosmetic condition matters more than function
- Big hard parts where inspection is possible
Best way to avoid the wrong part
Even the right category (OEM/aftermarket/used) can go sideways if fitment isn’t verified.
- Confirm series and year (and engine) before buying
- If possible, use VIN to verify fitment
- When in doubt, send a part request with details and photos
